Then again, I wasn't terribly fond of the combat system in general, at least not with this much weight attached to it.Ĭompared to say XCOM 2's Long War mod, where I've sunk 40+ hours and 60 dead troopers in a single campaign, and my interest is still going strong. There isn't nearly enough tactical options available to us the players to make the sacrifices seem worthwhile instead of just needlessly wasteful. I left because the grind got too harsh for my tastes. I played a lot of Darkest Dungeon, made it to the final dungeon even. Just give me SOME alternative to suicide, no matter how painful. I would be more willing to get through the game (because I DID enjoy the gameplay, maybe 15 hours in), if I knew there was an alternative, if I could somehow choose for your character to survive the ending, even if it meant being locked into some sort of tormented eternal warfare with the HoD - similar to the fate of the warrior at the end of the first Diablo. Like sexual violence, or child abuse, a storyteller has to be very, very careful with how they use and portray it, if I'm going to be on board. Suicide, as far as I'm concerned, is just one step too far. Where the ending crosses the line, for me, is the player character shooting himself at the end. I think my main problem isn't that the heroes are sacrificed, the survivors are scarred, and that the victory is temporary. But to go through something as stressful and unforgiving as DD, AND to be "rewarded" by a total downer ending.I'm just not that kind of masochist. I can take a grimdark ending from a book, because the only effort I put into reading a story is flipping pages.
Agree that the ending fits the tone of the genre, but also agree with posters who've basically said it's not worth the grind.
